Google faces a £1 billion trial over Play Store commissions in the UK

Around 20 million UK consumers and businesses are covered by the claim, which argues that commissions of up to 30% were passed on to players.

A seven-week trial has opened at the Competition Appeal Tribunal in London over the fees Google charges on the Play Store.

The collective action, led by consumer advocate Liz Coll, claims more than £1 billion in damages for about 20 million UK consumers and businesses, who are included automatically. It argues that Google abused a dominant position by charging developers up to 30% on apps, in-app purchases and subscriptions between October 2015 and July 2026, and that those costs ended up in players' prices.

The trial runs until November 20. Whatever the verdict, it is one more reason why stores outside Google Play, like ours, exist.
