DLSS 5 Explained: Launch, RTX 50 Support and Performance Hit

DLSS 5 launched September 3 in NBA 2K27 for RTX 50 cards. What 3D-guided neural rendering does, the performance cost and when RTX 40 gets it.

DLSS 5 is the most argued-about graphics feature of the year. It officially launched on September 3, 2026, and so far it exists in exactly one game. Here is what it does, what it costs in frame rate and what Nvidia has promised next.

What DLSS 5 actually is

Earlier versions of DLSS rendered games at a lower resolution and used AI to rebuild a sharper image. DLSS 5 is a different idea. Nvidia calls it 3D-guided neural rendering. Tom's Hardware describes how the game still draws its scanned 3D models, then DLSS 5 combines training data with engine data to infer lighting, shadows and surface detail and push the scene toward photorealism. Because it is built into the engine, developers can tune the result instead of applying a blanket filter. GamesRadar's more blunt description is a generative AI layer on top of rendered frames.

That is why the reaction was heated when it was announced earlier this year. Many critics argued that it changes the original art direction of the games it touches, and some dismissed it as an AI filter.

Where you can use it

The only official game is NBA 2K27, developed with Visual Concepts. It works on RTX 50-series GPUs and laptops, and through GeForce Now. In the game's settings the feature appears as a simple toggle called DLSS Neural Rendering, and PC Gamer reads the new label as a sign that Nvidia is trying to separate it from regular upscaling. Nvidia has told PC Gamer's staff that normal DLSS upscaling will keep getting updates separately.

  • Launch date: September 3, 2026
  • First and only supported game at launch: NBA 2K27
  • Hardware: GeForce RTX 50 series, laptops, GeForce Now
  • Setting name in game: DLSS Neural Rendering

The performance cost

This is the part that matters for buyers. PC Gamer measured frame rates falling by as much as 73 percent on an RTX 5080 in NBA 2K27. Tom's Hardware looked at Nvidia's own headline figure of 370 FPS at 4K on an RTX 5090, compared with 240 FPS with it off, and pointed out that the number depends on 6x multi frame generation, which means the game itself runs at roughly 61 FPS of real frames. By its calculation, turning the feature on cut true performance by about four times, and the image was also being upscaled from 1080p. Those are third-party interpretations of Nvidia's marketing, and the real cost varies by game and settings.

What do people think of the image quality?

GamesRadar's hands-on was more positive than its writer expected. The writer is opposed to using generative AI to alter game art styles, but concluded that in a realistic sports simulation like NBA 2K27 the technique pays off and is less exaggerated than Nvidia's marketing stills, which came from games such as Resident Evil Requiem, Hogwarts Legacy and Starfield. The writer still noticed faces that looked overly sharp and artificial in some moments. In other words, the result depends heavily on the style of the game.

RTX 40 support, what comes next and should you care

Nvidia initially limited the feature to RTX 50 cards. After modders showed it could be made to run on RTX 40, 30 and even 20 series cards, Nvidia's PR head Ben Berraondo said that once RTX 50 performance is more fully tuned, the company plans to work on official RTX 40 support. A separate Nvidia reply said model updates are expected later this fall. No date has been given for RTX 40 support, and the feature is not confirmed for any other game yet. Tom's Hardware also notes that RTX 40 cards only support up to 2x multi frame generation, so performance there is an open question.

There are also leaks and experimental runtimes that insert the technology into older games, which has produced plenty of strange screenshots. Those are unofficial.

If you own an RTX 50 card and play NBA 2K27, you can try it and decide. For everyone else, DLSS 5 is a feature to watch rather than a reason to upgrade, at least until more games, performance updates and the RTX 40 plan arrive.

FAQ

What is DLSS 5?

DLSS 5 is Nvidia's 3D-guided neural rendering technology. Instead of only upscaling, it uses AI and engine data to enhance lighting and surface detail toward photorealism.

Which GPUs support DLSS 5?

At launch it works on GeForce RTX 50-series GPUs and laptops, plus GeForce Now. Nvidia says it plans to add official RTX 40-series support later, with no date given.

Which games support DLSS 5?

Only NBA 2K27 officially supports it at the moment. More games are expected, but none are confirmed in the sources we checked.
