Valve's Steam Machine is real, shipping and expensive. The living-room PC that was teased a year ago finally has a price, and getting one means joining a queue. Here is the confirmed picture as of 2 October 2026, with the Steam Frame headset following the same path.
Prices and models
Valve announced pricing in June. According to PC Gamer, the 512 GB model costs 1,049 dollars and the 2 TB model costs 1,349 dollars, both without a controller. Adding the Steam Controller brings them to 1,128 and 1,428 dollars. The controller costs 99 dollars on its own, but only 79 dollars extra in the bundle, and Valve's supply of standalone controllers is limited, so the bundle may be the only way to get one before 2027. Both 2 TB models include two extra magnetic faceplates, one in red fabric and one in solid walnut, and Valve has said it will release CAD files for anyone who wants to make their own.
- 512 GB: 1,049 dollars (879 pounds, 1,039 euros)
- 2 TB: 1,349 dollars
- 512 GB with controller: 1,128 dollars
- 2 TB with controller: 1,428 dollars
Why it costs this much
Valve says its original price goal is no longer viable. It explained that when it began sourcing parts in 2023 it had a good understanding of how costs might change, but memory and storage prices moved quickly and significantly over the past year, with some components unavailable at any price. The prices reflect parts secured over the previous six months, and Valve said the shortage affected its launch quantity more than anything else. Tom's Hardware reports that Valve compared the increase to the roughly 45 percent rise seen on the Steam Deck. A Valve engineer has also said the machine will not be subsidized like a console, because it competes with the PC market.
How buying works
Valve ran a one-time randomized reservation. Sign-ups closed on June 25 at 10am Pacific, after which Valve randomized the list. People near the top got a reservation, and everyone else went on a waitlist. A reserved buyer receives an email and has three days to complete the purchase before the slot passes to someone else. Shipping began on June 29.
Valve said in July that it was fulfilling orders daily and expected everyone in the reservation queue to have the option to buy by the end of 2026. The queues run per product and per region, so some regions have already begun inviting waitlisted customers. Being offered a purchase is not the same as receiving the hardware, so delivery of the last orders could stretch into 2027.
Scalpers moved quickly. GamesRadar found completed eBay sales as high as 2,899 dollars for the 2 TB model without a controller and listings up to 3,200 dollars for the top bundle. GamesRadar's advice to readers is not to blow their savings on inflated resale listings while the official queue moves.
The Steam Frame follows the same model
Valve has since opened Steam Frame reservations. The headset costs 1,059 dollars for 256 GB and 1,299 dollars for 1 TB, with VR controllers included. Sign-ups ran from September 14 until September 17 at 10am Pacific, followed by a one-time randomization and the first purchase emails on September 18. Anyone who joins later goes to the back of the waitlist. An ergonomic accessories kit costs 49 dollars and a power adapter costs 29 dollars, and any 45 W USB-C charger should work instead.
What it means for PC gamers
The Steam Machine is positioned by Valve as an extension of PC gaming, not a console, and it runs SteamOS. The price puts it well above a PlayStation 5 and in the range of a mid-range gaming PC, and it arrives while memory costs keep rising. GamesRadar quotes Valve as saying the memory crisis is still getting worse, so a price drop soon is unlikely. For anyone who is curious, the practical advice is simple: join the waitlist if you have not already, compare against building your own PC, and be wary of inflated resale listings.
