Phantom Blade Zero Release Date: October 29 on PC and PS5

Phantom Blade Zero is the action game many PC players have circled for months, and its calendar has been busy. After sitting in the crowded September window, it was pushed back by 50 days. The new release date is October 29, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and PC, which puts it a few weeks ahead of Grand Theft Auto VI.

The delay and why it happened

The game was originally set for September 9. Following its appearance at a PlayStation State of Play, creator Soulframe, the studio's founder and director, announced the change on X. In his statement he apologised to players and said the team did not want to ship while there was still a chance to take the game one step further. He argued that a 50-day delay cannot solve everything, but gives enough time for a number of clearly defined improvements that affect how the game feels the moment players start. He also said that fixing these through post-launch patches would not have been the same, because players who buy on day one deserve the best version from the start.

PC Gamer read the statement as pointing partly at visual technology, though Soulframe did not name a specific feature. In a later interview with PC Gamer, Soulframe said the extra time lets the team fix more bugs and optimize more so that a huge day-one patch is not needed.

What the game is

Phantom Blade Zero is a third-person action RPG built in Unreal Engine 5, set in a wuxia-inspired martial world. According to its Steam page, you play Soul, a warrior framed for the murder of his master and left with only sixty-six days to live after a wound to the heart. Hunted and alone, he travels the Wulin to unravel a conspiracy that has ensnared the martial world. Steam's tags describe it as an action RPG with martial arts combat, Souls-like elements and a cinematic, story-rich presentation.

The developer calls its style kungfupunk, a blend of classic kung fu cinema and a darker, grittier setting. PC Gamer's preview, written by Wes Fenlon after flying to China to play it, said no other game has come as close to letting players fight with the operatic flourish of films such as Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

Donnie Yen and the action team

One of the biggest reveals this summer was that Hong Kong action star Donnie Yen is involved in the project. A long trailer released alongside Steam pre-orders showed that Yen voices and plays Mo Yuan, Soul's father, and that he has served as creative consultant on the kung fu choreography since 2023. This tracks with an earlier PlayStation Blog post from 2023 naming Kenji Tanigaki, a long-time member of Yen's stunt team, as action director.

Platforms, pre-orders and timing

Pre-orders are live on Steam, with a standard version and a Digital Deluxe Edition. Pre-order bonuses on Steam include an accessory called Treasure Basin, which raises Remnant Dust drops by 10 percent, and an outfit called Legacy, and the Steam page says both can also be earned through normal progression. Steam currently displays the release as 28 October, which most likely reflects regional time zones, while the studio and press give October 29.

Facing the autumn crush

The delay moved it out of an overloaded September that included The Blood of Dawnwalker, Marvel's Wolverine, Silent Hill: Townfall, Control: Resonant and Halloween: The Game, according to GamesRadar. Soulframe told PC Gamer that the team does not think about competition and cares only about the quality of the product. Late October is still a busy stretch, with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 on October 23, and the shadow of GTA 6 on November 19. No second delay has been announced.
